Planning for Refinery Closures that Benefit Workers, Communities, and the Environment
Hosted by the Climate Center
California is a major petroleum refining state. However, two refineries — Phillips 66 in Wilmington and Valero in Benicia — have announced plans to close at the end of 2025 and early 2026, respectively. Together, these refineries produce about 17 percent of the state’s gasoline supply. If both refineries close as planned, the state could face gasoline supply shortfalls in 2026 and beyond. These announcements also raise environmental, economic, safety, workforce, equity, and other concerns.
Thursday, July 31, 10:00 – 11:30am PT, on Zoom

In this webinar, experts will use these two pending closures as case studies to explore the potential supply challenge, how local governments across the state can recover lost tax revenues, and how policymakers can ensure worker and community safety. We’ll also consider what kinds of benefits might emerge for nearby communities as refineries are closed, cleaned up, and transitioned to other uses. Lastly, we’ll cover the challenges that exist for skilled refinery workers trying to transition to climate-friendly jobs. Join us to hear from local government, state agency, environmental justice, and labor representatives.
August! Historic Peace Boat Sailing to SF Bay!
Golden Rule Sailboat Promotes End to Nuclear Weapons and War
A project of Veterans For Peace
The historic Golden Rule peace boat will sail to San Francisco Bay this August to sound the alarm about the growing danger of nuclear war, and to promote an end to war and militarism. The 34-foot wooden ketch and its 4-person crew will sail around the Bay throughout August, making stops in multiple cities, including San Francisco, Alameda, Berkeley, Richmond and San Mateo. Public meetings with local organizations will feature film screenings and speakers. The public will be invited to visit the boat and a lucky few will even go out sailing on the Bay.

A Legacy of Sailing for Peace
Originally launched in 1958 by Quaker peace activists, the Golden Rule set out to disrupt U.S. nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands — sparking an international movement to end nuclear weapons testing. After sinking in a gale in Humboldt Bay in 2010, the boat was raised and restored by a coalition of veterans, Quakers and boat lovers, and re-launched in 2015 as a national project of Veterans For Peace. Since then, the Golden Rule has sailed more than 22,000 miles, bringing its message of peace and disarmament to ports across the U.S., Hawai’i, Canada, Mexico and Cuba.
The Golden Rule Peace Boat is crewed by volunteers and powered by wind, community, and conscience.
