Tell Congress and University of California President Dynes that America Doesn’t Need a New Hydrogen Bomb!
As debate in Congress continues over whether the United States should build a new hydrogen bomb, proponents of the new nuclear weapon are trying to cloud the issue. After selecting the design for the first new American hydrogen bomb in two decades in March 2007, Department of Energy officials have confused the issue by claiming it isn’t really a new nuclear weapon. The world community won’t be fooled. Building the so-called “Reliable Replacement Warhead,” or RRW, will be a costly mistake—adding to the $54 billion the U.S. spends on nuclear weapons programs annually. This new weapon also will lead to health dangers for workers and communities involved in its production and increase threats of nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism.
California Senator Diane Feinstein said in April, “My vote depends on whether I think this is a new warhead.” She’s asking the right question, help her get to the right answer.
Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher (CA) said last month “While the recently announced RRW proposal would not have new military characteristics — and I do not consider it to be a new weapon — I am still seeking more information about this program.” Make sure she hears from you that a new hydrogen bomb meets all the criteria for the definition of a new nuclear weapon.
In the coming weeks, Congress will consider President Bush’s $88 million request for the RRW program as part of the Fiscal Year 2008 appropriations process. The future of nuclear proliferation rests on their decision. Tell Congress that America doesn’t need a new hydrogen bomb. Click here to send a message to your representatives.
This message must also be heard by University of California (UC) President Robert Dynes. UC, the world’s largest single nuclear warhead lab management contractor, has played a central role in the Bush administration’s dangerous effort to revive U.S. nuclear weapons production. UC’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory came up with the winning design for the new nuclear weapon, while the manufacture of one of the bomb’s key features, its plutonium pit trigger, is likely to be carried out another UC laboratory – Los Alamos National Lab in New Mexico. BRING OUR TROOPS HOME—FAST
On July 4, CODEPINK
and Gold Star Families launched an historic hunger
strike called Troops
Home Fast, calling for the U.S. government
to bring our troops home from Iraq--fast. A core
group of long-term fasters is fasting in front
of the White House in Washington, DC, and both
fasters and non-fasters are invited to join. More
than 4,000 people are engaging in solidarity fasts
around the nation and in 22 other countries. Several
members of congress are participating. The fast
will continue until September 21, International
Peace Day, when there will be a week of mass actions
against the war. For more information please visit: www.troopshomefast.org.
HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND MEDICAL
STUDENTS ARE UNDER THREAT IN THE CURRENT SITUATION
IN NEPAL
A letter was received on April 13, 2006, from
leaders of Physicians For Social Responsibility
Nepal (PSR Nepal) describing the frightening situation
there, including the arrest of most of the physician
leaders of PSR Nepal (click here to
see the letter). PSR members can play an important
role to help the imprisoned be released safely
and to pressure the government to respect human
rights:
- A global petition has just been started calling
for the immediate release of doctors and health
professionals being detained in Nepal. Please click here and sign the petition today.
